Four Long Beach students and a teacher were selected as the city’s delegation to the 2009 Environmental Summit in Yokkaichi, Japan, in the second year for the event, which will include junior high and high school students representing Long Beach, Yokkaichi and Tianjin, China, to discuss environmental issues facing their home cities and the world.
Stuart Jones teaches Japanese at Long Beach Poly High School and last year was an assistant chaperone for Poly students who traveled to Japan. The 2007 graduate of California State University, Long Beach holds a B. A. degree in Japanese and Asian Studies and also has a single-subject teaching credential in Japanese from CSULB.
The student delegation consists of Suzie Chhouk, Divya Kernik and Samantha Liberman from Long Beach Poly High School, and Sarah Paset of Newcomb Academy.
The representatives will leave Aug. 2 and return Aug. 11. They will be housed at an international center but also will have a home stay with families in Yokkaichi and will tour Kyoto. All lodging and meals are being provided by the City of Yokkaichi. The Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association is coordinating arrangements for the Long Beach delegation.
The program will include a tour of the environmental facilities in Yokkaichi, including the Port of Yokkaichi and the petrochemical complex, discussions regarding environmental issues and a presentation by each delegation in the Hall of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry about the environment in each home country and what each delegation can learn from the other.
