Sunayna Bakaya, M.D., a board-certified diagnostic radiologist, has been named medical director of imaging for Long Beach Memorial, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach and Community Hospital Long Beach, which annually perform 204,000 imaging procedures, according to MemorialCare Health System.
Bakaya, who previously served six years as chief of Body Imaging at the three hospitals, will help lead the team of more than 150 radiologists, technologists and support staff.
“Imaging impacts all areas of medicine, and emerging innovations in molecular imaging and therapeutics is transforming patient care,” Bakaya said. “It’s an honor to be part of this exceptional team supported by the most advanced technologies, techniques and treatments.”
These include: the 320-slice CT scanner for ultrafast scans that can image an entire organ in a single rotation allowing physicians to detect and treat life-threatening diseases at their earliest stages; new state-of-the-art MRI scanner in Miller Children’s; advanced endoscopic gastrointestinal care; comprehensive stroke center; interventional oncology; and more.
Bakaya completed her radiology residency at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and fellowship in body imaging at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. A graduate of MemorialCare Physician Leadership Academy, she received Long Beach Memorial’s Family Medicine Residency Program Outstanding Teacher Award and serves on American Roentgen Ray Society’s Radiology Education Committee.
