LB Museum of Art hosting local high-school students’ work exploring Cabinets of Curiosity

The Long Beach Museum of Art, 2300 E. Ocean Blvd., is currently highlighting local high-school artists in its latest exhibition entitled Exploring the Self Through Cabinets of Curiosity. On display through April 13, the exhibition features art from select Long Beach Unified School District high-school students. The inspiration of the exhibition dates back to the European Renaissance, when the elite society would house collections of objects they found interesting and would also convey their power and wealth thus creating their own “cabinets of curiosities.”
For this exhibit, students from seven participating LBUSD high schools created their own object collections that explore and represent them, reflecting their personalities political ideas, religions and family connections.

Students had a wide creative license in creating their art using either two- or three-dimensional form. On exhibit are drawings, paintings, photographs, collages and an installation.
Work was juried by the Long Beach Museum of Art staff and was chosen based on the creative interpretation of the theme. Participating high schools include Jordan, Millikan, McBride, Cabrillo, Poly, Wilson and Renaissance.
The following students have been selected based on their aesthetic merit to be part of a hands-on museum learning opportunity: Sara Von Epp, Millikan High School; Mackenzie Woodworth, Renaissance High School for the Arts; Jaret Dixon, Renaissance High School for the Arts; Penelope Orellana, Renaissance High School for the Arts; Paloma Aguado, Jordan High School; Catherine Mason, McBride High School; Janeth Toro, Cabrillo High School; Sophie Malmon Berg, Millikan High School; Quincy Irving, Wilson High School; Rhiannon Hulins, Polytechnic High School; Rebecca Cisernos, Jordan High School; and Kenyonece Silva, Jordan High School.
