The Long Beach Museum of Art is continuing its 60th anniversary celebration with three new gallery rotations over the next few weeks that will feature works from the museum’s permanent collection. The Celebrating Sixty exhibition series will continue with a special tribute to the museum’s donors, collectors and artists. The museum’s second-floor galleries will feature works acquired over the decades through gifts by generous individuals, foundations, and associations.
Stories from Our Legacy, which opens April 16, will reflect the museum’s long-standing commitment to contemporary artists, as well as collecting and exhibiting art in all media. These selections come from the mid-1970s to the present, including the first acquisition of 2010— an early work by artist Wade Reynolds.
Chronicles of Collecting, which opens April 23, represents major gifts from the 1950s to present day. Since its founding, gifts of art have come to the museum from many sources, including artists, collectors, and museum supporters. The museum’s collection proudly reflects the generosity of many collectors and donors throughout Long Beach and the greater Southern California region.
Highlights from Collector’s Circle Acquisitions will feature many works previously acquired by the museum, as well as proposed acquisitions for 2010. In 1994, the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation established a membership category with two important missions— involve the community in the selection of artworks for the permanent collection, while raising funds to purchase works of art for the Museum’s art collection.
These three exhibitions, illustrating a special thanks to collectors, donors, and artists, will be celebrated on Thursday, July 15 at a press, artist and patron reception from 5pm to 7pm, followed by “LBMA After Dark” from 7pm to 10pm. All three exhibitions will close on August 29. Also recognized at this reception will be A Light in the Shadow: Decades of Art by Women opening on the first floor of the gallery pavilion on June 25.
