Long Beach and Signal Hill residents are invited to join communities throughout the United States for the 24th annual “National Night Out” against crime on Tuesday, Aug. 7 . The event involves more than 11,000 communities, and several million people are expected to participate.
“National Night Out” is designed to heighten drug and crime prevention awareness, increase participation in anti-crime efforts, strengthen police and community partnerships and alert criminals that neighborhoods are organized in their efforts to fight crime.
The Signal Hill Police Department will host its fourth annual “National Night Out” at Calbrisas Park on California Avenue near Burnett Street from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be food, games, giveaways and a dunk booth. The event is co-sponsored by Target in Signal Hill.
Traditionally between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., residents throughout the city of Long Beach and cities across the nation turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening visiting with neighbors to increase the community bond.
The Long Beach Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit will be hosting a “Crime Prevention and Safety Fair” in celebration of “National Night Out” in the Kmart parking lot, 2900 Bellflower Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Residents are invited to come and view police and fire equipment displays while enjoying free refreshments. The Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit, Fire Department personnel and several crime prevention-related businesses and organizations will be on hand to provide crime prevention and safety information.
Residents can also bring up to five boxes of personal financial documents for free on-site shredding, courtesy of Paper Recycling and Shredding Specialists, Inc. Additional boxes are $3 each.
The Long Beach Police Department’s Auto Theft Detail will also be available to etch your vehicle’s VIN onto the frame of the third row seat of your SUV or van, which serves as a deterrent or assists with identification of recovered stolen third row seats–a popular item for thieves.
The evening will feature live music, a moon bounce, face painting, child fingerprinting and more.
