The Long Beach Shakespeare Company (LBSC) will turn back the clock and transform an empty warehouse in Bixby Knolls into a Victorian hamlet, complete with ghosts and yuletides, for three weeks of A Christmas Carol, now through Sunday, Dec. 19 at the Expo Center, 4321 Atlantic Ave. LBSC Co-Artistic Director Denis McCourt will direct the adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens holiday tale.
The production features classically trained actors Simon James (Royal Shakespeare Company), David Fox-Brenton (Stratford Shakespeare Festival) and Linda Slade (Royal Shakespeare Company) along with a seasoned ensemble. Rounding out the production will be festive carolers, fiddlers and a cast of local children. Show times will be available for matinees or evening performances. Tickets are available online at lbshakespeare.org and are $20 per person or $10 for students with a valid ID.
“The Long Beach Shakespeare Company will transform The Expo Center into a Victorian winter wonderland complete with beautiful holiday music, haunting ghosts and several surprises for a joyous holiday experience for the entire family,” McCourt said. “We look forward to making this production a holiday tradition for Long Beach residents to enjoy year after year.”
McCourt says his adaptation of the classic novel will feature dark elements and at the same time play up all of the wonderful traditions that make it a holiday favorite.
A Christmas Carol is a tale about a miserly curmudgeon and his spiritual conversion and redemption after being visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.
“With the economy the way it is and unemployment at an all-time high, this is a perfect time for us to come together as a community and celebrate the joy of the season and remind ourselves of what is really important in life,” McCourt said.
