Gabel will step into the role Dec. 19, following Oakley’s Dec. 18 departure to become chancellor of the California Community College system.
The search for a permanent successor is underway, and trustees expect to name a new president by March, according to LBCC. The Board voted unanimously to appoint Gabel into the acting position.
She will not be a candidate for the permanent position.
“I’d like to thank the Board for having the faith and confidence in me to serve as acting superintendent-president,” Gabel said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve the college in this capacity.”
Gabel, a certified public accountant, has served as the vice president of Administrative Services since joining LBCC in 2007. Her areas of oversight include all budget, fiscal, purchasing and accounting offices, facilities construction and maintenance, emergency management and technology.
She serves on several local boards that provide fiscal oversight and statewide organizations that support community colleges.
The Association of Chief Business Officials (ACBO) recently presented Gabel with the Walter Star-Robie award, given annually to business administration professionals in the California community college system for outstanding achievements and service to their respective districts and the state.
Also at last week’s Board meeting, trustees approved appointments to a 22-member presidential search committee that will oversee the selection process. The committee includes faculty, staff and student and community representatives.
