LBCC, CSU agreement offers new scholarship support and transfer options for students

Long Beach City College (LBCC) President Eloy Ortiz Oakley and California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) President Dr. Mildred García signed a new “Pathways to Success Pledge” at LBCC’s annual College Day ceremony last week which marks a new partnership between the institutions to increase transfer success and bachelor’s degree attainment for LBCC students.

“The new Pathways to Success Pledge will help more LBCC students transfer and earn bachelor’s degrees,” said Oakley. “I thank President García for her leadership in helping to create clear pathways for our students to careers in high-need, high-wage industries and professions.”

“Through Pathways to Success, California State University, Dominguez Hills and Long Beach City College pledge to build more than a path to a college degree but a solid future for our students and, in many ways, the entire state,” García said. “California depends on a diverse educated workforce, and through this partnership we aim to ensure that students complete their college degree and become the successful leaders of tomorrow who meet the needs of the state and nation. ”

The “Pathways to Success Pledge” is just one program underway at LBCC to speed degree attainment, especially among students of color. LBCC has embarked on a college-wide Student Success Initiative which builds individualized instruction into the curriculum of critical gateway courses for transfer, degree and certificates gateway courses for transfer, degree and certificates to help more students reach their goals.

College Day is an annual tradition at LBCC and marks the ceremonial beginning of the academic year when faculty, administrators and staff gather to prepare for the upcoming academic year. In addition to signing the pledge, Garcia offered a keynote address with her insights on student success, and Oakley and Long Beach Community College District Board President Mark Bowen offered remarks to help set the course and tone for the coming academic year.
