newest building— the Public Safety/Central Plant Facility.

Long Beach City College officials this week announced the opening of a new Public Safety and Central Plant facility at the Liberal Arts Campus. The project is the latest in a series of new buildings constructed at the college as part of a multi-year building program. The complex will house the campus safety officers and centralize the heating and cooling systems to increase efficiency and reduce the environmental impacts of those activities.

“The Central Plants on both LBCC campuses will improve the efficiency of the way we deliver our utilities, which will not only save money over time, but more importantly, it will save energy and make us a greener campus,” said LBCC President Eloy Ortiz Oakley. “It is also an example to our students of the college finding ways to decrease our use of energy.”
Once they are fully operational, the college’s central plants are expected to reduce energy consumption by more than half a million kilowatt hours, eliminate approximately 5000 tons of CO2 emissions and save approximately $60,000 a year in operating and maintenance costs.
In addition, the Central Plants will also reduce operating and maintenance costs, peak electrical demand, and electrical requirements of future buildings while improving overall efficiency and service.
The building will also house the campus police department to create a new and highly visible office for campus safety officers to improve student safety. Long Beach Police Chief Anthony Batts, who spoke at the December 2 dedication of the new facility, commended the college for providing a new facility for campus safety officers and expressed his appreciation for the strong partnership that exists between the Long Beach Police Department and LBCC.
Also, the LBCC Viking baseball program will have new training and locker facilities in the areas closest to the baseball field.
