The California Community College Chancellor’s Office announced March 21 that Long Beach City College (LBCC) is one of 14 recipients of the California College Promise Innovation Grant Program. LBCC will receive $750,000 that will support the Long Beach College Promise.
“Long Beach City College is proud to be one of the first recipients of the California College Promise Innovation Grant Program,” said LBCC Acting Superintendent-President Ann-Marie Gabel. “We’re also proud that the Long Beach College Promise was cited as the model for Assemblymembers O’Donnell and Rodriguez’s legislation. We look forward to using the Innovation Grant money to expand the Long Beach College Promise and assist more students achieve their higher education goal.”
The Long Beach College Promise began in 2008 as collaboration between the Long Beach Unified School District, Long Beach City College and California State University Long Beach to increase the success of local students in higher education. The City of Long Beach joined the partnership in 2014, with a focus on early education and internships.
LBCC offered the free semester to LBUSD graduates in 2008 with the start of the Long Beach College Promise. LBCC expanded the tuition-free education to one full academic year to all qualified Long Beach Unified School District graduates in 2015.
