Long Beach police sought public help on Wednesday, Jan. 6 to find a hit-and-run motorist responsible for fatally injuring a woman who was crossing a street in a crosswalk.
Officers sent to Atlantic Avenue and Market Street about 8 p.m. Tuesday found the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
“Upon arrival, officers found a female adult pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle,” a press release from the Long Beach Police Department said. “The Long Beach Fire Department responded, but despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian succumbed to her injuries at the scene.”
Authorities withheld her name, pending notification of her relatives.
“The preliminary investigation revealed a sedan traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Atlantic Avenue struck a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk,” a police statement said. “The driver did not stop and immediately fled the area.”
The car was red, and it sustained “major front-end damage,'” police said.
