The service dog, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois named Credo, had partnered with Officer Mike Parcells and served the department for two years.
On June 28, Credo was shot during a SWAT call-out involving a barricaded suspect wanted in connection with an assault with a deadly weapon investigation.
Parcells transported Credo to an animal hospital shortly thereafter. Despite life-saving efforts, Credo succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident. Credo was a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who served the Long Beach Police Department for two years. During his time on the streets alongside Parcells, Credo worked patrol and narcotics and was involved in over 30 apprehensions.
Parcells is a 23-year veteran of the department and has been a K-9 handler for 16 years. Credo is the second dog that Parcells has lost in the line of duty.
On Oct. 2, 2005, at approximately 11:15pm, his K-9 partner, Ranger, was shot during a SWAT call-out in the 1200 block of Loma Vista Avenue. Ranger was severely injured, having sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, and died during surgery. Ranger was also a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who served the LBPD and the community for two years.
