Graduating seniors in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) have earned a record $95.5 million in scholarships and grants this year, according to the school district. The total is about $19 million more than the previous record set last year and represents more than a five-fold increase since 2007.
Poly High School/PAAL students earned $30.5 million, surpassing last year’s school record by $1.7 million. More than $17.5 million of Poly’s scholarships are for athletics. Individual awards included: a $458,000 scholarship to Miami University in Ohio; $262,000 to Northwestern, $254,000 to Cornell; $252,000 to University of Pennsylvania; and $236,000 to Wellesley. Other top school acceptances included Stanford, Harvard, NYIT, USC, Northeastern, Penn State, Boston University, Dartmouth, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, 15 California State University campuses and all of the University of California campuses.
Wilson Classical High School students earned $22.9 million, more the doubling the school’s record. Awards included: $250,000 to University of Pennsylvania; $226,000 to St. Mary’s University; and $232,000 to USC. Top school acceptances included all UC campuses, Stanford, Clemson, Drexel, Brown, Columbia, University of Washington, Occidental, Sarah Lawrence College, Duke, Princeton, University of Ithaca, Texas Southern University, Syracuse, U.S. Naval Academy, George Washington University, Creighton University, Cornell, University of Oregon, Boston College, Bard College, Seton Hall University, Pepperdine and Southern Methodist University.
California Academy of Mathematics and Science students earned $14 million. Awards included: $232,000 to Barry University; scholarships of $213,000 and $145,000 to Stanford; $220,000 to Washington University in St. Louis; $189,000 to Northwestern; $187,000 to Tulane; $182,000 to Grinnell; $181,000 and $177,000 to Harvard; $176,000 to NYU; $179,000 to Pomona College; $167,000 to Yale; $167,000 to Swarthmore; $164,000 to Kalamazoo; $160,000 to Texas A&M; $155,000 to MIT; $145,000 to Cal Lutheran; two scholarships of $95,000 to USC; and seven UC Regents scholarships. Other top school acceptances include Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Olin College of Engineering, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Rice, Wellesley, Williams, UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego.
Millikan High School students earned $9.8 million. Awards included: full-ride scholarships to UC Berkeley, CSULB, Syracuse and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, along with scholarships to several UC and CSU campuses, University of LaVerne, Chapman, Boise State, Arizona State, Westmont College, University of Puget Sound, Cal Lutheran, Alabama State, Drexel, Calvin College, Pitzer College, Biola University, University of the Pacific, Mount St. Mary’s College, University of Arizona, Loyola Marymount, Colorado State, North Park University, Westminster College, University of Michigan, Johnson & Wales, Oregon State and Pepperdine. Other top school acceptances included Stanford, USC, Carnegie Mellon, Duke, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, University of Pennsylvania, Reed College, Lewis and Clark College, Willamette, Temple, Baylor, Sterling College, University of Hawaii at Monoa, Chaminade University, Marymount University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Colorado School of Mines, University of Denver, Eastern Michigan University, Seton Hall University, Grand Canyon University, University of Chicago, Wagner University, Cornell, Boston University, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Midway College, Texas Christian University, University of North Texas, University of the Pacific, Tuskegee University, William Penn University, Dillard University, University of Redlands, Whittier College, Fordham University, De Paul University, Tiffin University, Hampton University and Northwestern.
Lakewood High School students earned $7.3 million, including scholarships to Brigham Young, Baylor, Biola and Mount St. Mary’s College. Top school acceptances included most UC and many CSU campuses, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado College of Mines, University of Texas, Baylor, Florida Institute of Technology, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University, Arizona State, University of Oregon, Western Oregon University, University of Nevada, Brigham Young, University of Redlands, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, Woodbury University, Occidental, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hawaii Pacific University, Concordia University, Academy of Art University, Otis College of Art and Design, Laguna College of Art and Design, University of La Verne, Biola University, Morgan State, Grambling State, University of Central Arkansas, Western New Mexico University, Southern University, Denison University, Dillard University, Langston University and Marymount California University.
Jordan High School/Jordan Plus students earned $5.7 million, nearly tripling last year’s amount. Top school acceptances included Brown, Hofstra University, Spelman, Chapman, Long Island University, UC Berkeley, UC Davis and UC Irvine.
Cabrillo High School students earned $3.3 million, including scholarships to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, University of Washington, USC and Cal Lutheran. Top school acceptances included several CSU campuses, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Howard, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Hawaii, Chaminade University, Jackson State, Richmond in London, Mount St. Mary’s and Bay Path College.
Avalon High School students on Catalina Island earned $1.7 million, including $155,000 from local community scholarships. Top school acceptances included Harvard, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, CSULB, San Diego State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Maritime, CSU Channel Islands, Chico State, Westmont, Grinnell College, Marymount College and College of Wooster.
Renaissance High School for the Arts students earned $263,450. Top school acceptances included 14 CSU campuses, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, Fashion Institute of Technology, New York University, Musicians Institute, Otis College of Art and Design, and St. John’s University.
Educational Partnership High School students earned $32,000.
Reid Continuation High School students earned $8,000.
Students districtwide also earned hundreds of non-monetary honors including Rotary Service Above Self, Most Inspiring Student, Eagle Scout, National Hispanic Recognition and National Merit awards.
