Letter: To 'air' a grievance

To ‘air’ a grievance
Thanks to the Signal Tribune for the articles regarding the proposal to turn Long Beach Airport into an international one. It is amazing how few people are aware of it or recognize the dangers and inconveniences it could force upon our peaceful community.
The Long Beach Airport is located in the very center of our city, with schools, churches, homes, apartments and businesses on all sides of it, making any kind of safe emergency landing or ditching a plane at sea almost impossible. We have already had fatalities emanating from it.
As the airport is now, Wikipedia ranks it as “one of the busiest general-aviation airports in the world.” With both LAX and John Wayne airports so near, do we really need another international one, and do we really want one with flights 24 hours, day and night, spreading noise and air pollution over our city and neighboring cities, plus turning the 405, 605, 91 and Long Beach freeways surrounding the airport into permanent bumper-to-bumper traffic jams? This would affect everyone in the entire region, not just those living near the airport.
We citizens of Lakewood, Signal Hill and Long Beach must unite and do everything we can to stop corporate greed and intimidation from destroying our tranquility and safety. Contact your council person, wherever you live!
