Family Ties

Longtime Signal Hill resident (and former councilmember/mayor) Nick Mekis, introduced his grandchildren into the pleasures of world travel this summer. Family members remember Mekis’s first world-traveling adventures in the early sixties. The Mekis family, along with other close relatives, began their seafaring journey on July 26 and landed in the Caribbean three days later.
The family visited Jamaica, Grand Cayman Islands and Cozumel, Mexico. Eleven members of the extended family took an excursion to the Mayan Ruins of Mexico on July 31.
The Mayan tour guide spoke of his ancestry with pride. He explained how the Mayans used astrology as a harvesting tool. He placed us in line with Mayan-made holes. When the sun shone through these holes, either the rainy season or the harvesting season was expected. It was a great opportunity for the family to travel together and it was a great experience.
