Letter to the Editor: ‘A golden moment of grace and dignity’

This letter to the editor was submitted by Linda Edgar, a California Heights resident.

Last year COVID-19 and the pandemic have been hard on Long Beach restaurants. It has been practically hard on the staff. Now that we can dine in again, I can’t help but noticing how hard the staffs are working.

Friday night, my husband and I were enjoying a Southern meal at Johnny Rebs on Long Beach Boulevard, and once again the staff was working so hard. Then suddenly a young man ran in the front door and looked nervous, and hid behind the door. Then more came in.

They looked nervous, unsettled and kept looking out the windows and coming in out of the door. It did not appear normal. Waiter Eleazar and waitress Brenda separately walked up to the group in and outdoors and quietly asked them to leave.

Eleazar locked the door for a few minutes to make sure they did not come in again. The police showed up almost instantly, they had already been called by the staff. I think most of the patrons did not know what was going on because the staff handled it so professionally. We later learned the group was being chased by another group. I told Brenda she was brave to walk up to that group and out that door to talk to them and she said, “I had to make sure my customers were safe.”

Within seconds the police did their job and the staff went right back to work taking care of the customers without missing a step. It was a golden moment of grace and dignity that I did not want to go unnoticed. Please go to Johnny Rebs and support this business they will take care of you.
