This opinion piece was submitted by Larry Holmgren in response to the Signal Tribune story CSU scraps SAT, ACT tests in admissions process published on March 24, 2022.
The SAT is an intelligence test. The A in SAT stands for aptitude. Having an aptitude for college work is important. Without minimum test standards screening people for college admission will be done by other means. So now, I read, high school graduation (and one’s grades in high school in the A-G required courses) will be the standard, but remember, high school standards have been lowered to create the facade of success.
I noticed your photo of some CSULB graduates from 2021. There will be no photos of the college freshmen dropouts from CSULB who dropped out because they couldn’t pass the remedial 9th grade algebra class nor the 10th grade remedial English composition class, yet incurred huge debts in the process, even if they lived off campus.
Nor will there be photos of college dropouts who were encouraged to go to one of the CSU colleges but were unable to read college-level textbooks because they were THREE years behind grade-level when they graduated from high school!
