Off course, or in the right direction?
I am writing to voice my support of [Signal Hill] Mayor [Edward] Wilson’s decision to use the commission nomination process as outlined in the City’s charter.
Four years ago, I interviewed and was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission. While the process was fine, I felt like I was speed-dating. I was only allowed five minutes to present myself as the best candidate for the appointment. In my opinion, the 2017 process used by Mayor Wilson was much more comprehensive and thoughtful. I sat down with Mayor Wilson for a half-hour interview where he asked me questions and we were able to have a dialogue regarding my qualifications, why I wanted to serve and the future direction of the City of Signal Hill. I know that there are a lot of people who don’t agree with the appointment process as outlined in the charter. However, obviously, there were those who thought it was a good idea as it is an option per the charter.
I’m also a little troubled by the opinion that the charter process lends itself to having inexperienced commissioners appointed. I would like to remind those individuals that we all, at some point in our lives, charter new territories. However, that does not mean that we lack the experience to be successful. Four year ago I was a new Parks and Recreations commissioner. Yes, I was charting new territory. However, it was not an area where I lack the necessary knowledge to do well in my appointment.
My advice to the naysayers is give us a chance.
