Intelligent design?

Scientists have filmed octopuses in Indonesia collecting discarded coconut shells, emptying them out, carrying them across the ocean floor, and using them as shelters. Researchers believe that this is the first time an invertebrate animal has been seen using tools.
I’m not surprised: octopuses, and other sea animals, are smart cookies. Octopuses have excellent memories; they play, just like dolphins and dogs; and they can learn by watching others. One octopus in a German zoo learned how to open jars of shrimp by copying zoo workers.
Lobsters recognize individual lobsters, remember past acquaintances, have elaborate courtship rituals, and help guide young lobsters across the ocean floor by holding claws in a line that can stretch for many yards. Fish “talk” to one another underwater and form complex social relationships.
Every day, we discover something new about the animals who share our world— including that, in many ways, they aren’t so different from us. In 2010, let’s resolve to treat all animals with kindness and respect. To find out more, please visit www.PETA.org.
