Litter-Free Long Beach is the city’s campaign to keep Long Beach streets, alleys, parks, school grounds, everywhere, clean and litter-free.
The campaign includes a creative education and outreach effort–“Lunch with a Lizard” –a 20-minute, educational performance designed to teach the next generation of adults about the importance of litter abatement and environmental stewardship. Each performance features two characters, a host and her lively friend, the Long Beach Litter-free Lizard.
Since September 2006, “Lunch with a Lizard” has been presented to 22 elementary schools in Long Beach, to a total of 9,431 students (kindergarten through third grades). In an effort to engage and sustain the interest of the young audiences, the city sponsored a Name-the-Lizard contest.
The third grade students of Room 14 at Lincoln Elementary School submitted the winning name–Mr. Scales–for the Long Beach Litter-Free Lizard. The newly-named Mr. Scales even made a special appearance at the June 28 student pep rally at Lincoln Elementary School.
Students of Room 14 and their teacher, Miss Stephanie Gee, will receive special certificates of recognition, signed by Mayor Bob Foster. Then, Miss Gee’s class will be treated to a special pizza party–their “lunch with a lizard.”
