Signal Hill author R. Michael Schlesinger will host a book-signing Tuesday, April 14 from 7pm to 9pm at the Grand Events Center for the releases of books he recently completed: one designed to help high-school students with disabilities transition into college life and another to guide parents of special-needs children through the process of individualized education programs.
50 Tips for Transitioning from High School to College: A Guide for Students Who Have Disabilities and Their Parents is a planning guide written for students with disabilities who are ready to transition into college and the unique challenges they will face.
Schlesinger, who has cerebral palsy and earned his master’s degree in counseling from California State University of Long Beach, writes from his first-hand experience.
“These are short tips and common, quick questions that I experienced when I was going to college,” Schlesinger said. “I wanted to pass them on to as many individuals with disabilities as possible.”
Navigating the I.E.P. Process: A Guide for Parents of Students Needing Accommodation in K-12 Special Education is another book Schlesinger wrote based on his own unique experiences.
“This is a short guide for parents that is concise and helps them know what to expect during this long and sometimes daunting process,” Schlesinger said.
The event will take place from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday, April 14 at the Grand Events Center, Pacific Room, 4101 E. Willow St. in Long Beach. Dessert, coffee and tea will be served. There will be books in both English and Spanish.
