In this March 9, 2012 photo, the “Levitated Mass” boulder made a stop in Bixby Knolls during a 10-day journey across Southern California on the way to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
The Bixby Knolls neighborhood is featured in a newly released documentary entitled Levitated Mass, which is about the 340-ton boulder of the same name that made its way through Long Beach in March of 2012 on its way to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) during its $10-million, 22-city tour.

Hundreds of Southern California residents had lined up along Atlantic Avenue on March 7 that year to “rock out” with the now famous art piece as it made a stop in Bixby Knolls. “Levitated Mass” received a grand welcome from Long Beach that featured “rock” -themed music, live artists painting their interpretations of it and river rock decorating.

The film documents the journey and the artist behind it— Michael Heizer— as it gained worldwide recognition during its installation in 2012. Over the course of 10 nights, the solid granite boulder traveled through Southern California neighborhoods on a 294-foot-long, 206-wheeled trailer.
