Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site is celebrating the grand opening of its new visitor center, restored arroyo landscape, improved entryway and enhanced educational programs through May 13 with a variety of public programs.
On Friday, May 11 at 7pm, the site will offer a “Visitors from the Past” performance, featuring actors portraying the Rancho’s 19th and early 20th Century owners, the Temples and Bixbys, during an outdoor theater experience. Dessert reception will follow. $12 advance reservations required. Call (562) 570-1755.
On Saturday, May 12, from 12:30pm to 4:30pm, the Rancho will host its grand-opening festival, featuring the new visitor center and enhanced interpretive exhibits. Attendees will be able to meet “living history” characters as they tour the historic adobe home. Cowboy Ken will share stories of ranching days, and live music will be provided by both Los Californios and a fiddler playing American tunes popular in the late 19th Century. Participants can also enjoy a historic fashion show, explore the world of early photography, and have their portraits done by a silhouette artist. There will also be demonstrations of blacksmithing, woodworking, quilting, lace-making and early medicine, and children’s activities will include butter-churning and clothes-washing the old-fashioned way. The Fire Department’s Employees Union will serve free hot dogs until 2:30pm, and packaged snacks will be available for sale. The event is free to the public.
On Sunday, May 13, at 10:30am, Rancho Los Cerritos will host a Mother’s Day brunch with champagne in the historic gardens and live music. Attendees will be able to meet some of the Rancho’s famous living history “moms” as well. Admission is $35, and $25 for children 10 and under. Call (562) 570-1755 for reservations.
Also on Sunday, May 13, at 5:30pm, the Rancho will offer a free concert of jazz music with the Susie Hansen Latin Band under a canopy of historic trees at Rancho Los Cerritos. Concert-goers may pack a picnic dinner and bring a lawnchair or blanket for seating. The historic adobe house will be open for tours during the concert.
