The American Red Cross Greater Long Beach Chapter earlier this month announced the names of the Volunteers of the Month for October. The preparedness team members chosen were LaVerne Duncan, Danny Vong, Roy Hanson, Al Palomino, Adriana Lopez, Charles Song, and Chan Hopson along with youth volunteers Jennifer and Kristyn Tith.
The preparedness initiative grew during the Katrina and Rita hurricanes of 2005. According to Red Cross representative Amanda Wyatt, the preparedness team worked to bring “Be Red Cross Ready” to over 1,000 people in African-American, Cambodian and Hispanic communities.
Twin sisters Jennifer and Kristyn Tith were chosen due to their contribution to the GLBC Youth Program. Jennifer and Kristyn are juniors at Poly High School and both serve on the youth executive board. Their responsibilities include the safe kids program, CPR/first aid trainings for the school clubs, new volunteer orientations, recruitment, youth meetings, and special activities.
“We are delighted to be working with these wonderful bilingual volunteers. It strengthens our ability to fulfill our mission to prevent, prepare, and respond to emergencies in our diverse communities,” said Margaret Arbini Madonna, GLBC public support officer. “The need is still great for Spanish-speaking volunteers.”
