Cathy Jacobson-Guzy, director of tennis programs for the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, was recently honored by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) as their Manager of the Year for Southern California for 2008.
Jacobson-Guzy has been the director of tennis programs at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center as well as the El Dorado Park Tennis Center since 1991 and has been involved with the sport of tennis for the last 25 years. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Jacobson-Guzy started her career in Southern California teaching tennis at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center and coaching tennis at Marina High School in Huntington Beach, at Cypress College and at St. Joseph High School in Lakewood.
In 1995, Jacobson-Guzy established her own company, First Serve, and became sole proprietor of the Billie Jean King and El Dorado Park tennis facilities on behalf of the City of Long Beach, focusing on developing junior tennis players and getting more young people involved in the game of tennis.
Jacobson-Guzy has helped expand the game of tennis in Long Beach, supporting local community organizations by providing lessons and use of courts for organizations including the NAACP, the National Junior Tennis League and the Long Beach Jewish Community Center. In June of 2008, the Special Olympics Southern California Tennis Competition moved to the El Dorado Park Tennis Center and Jacobson-Guzy provides them with a permanent home for their competitions.
