There is a serious problem in Long Beach, which warrants your investigation and coverage.
Long Beach City Council refuses to address the below noted issue, the reason is that they are making money from allowing the situation below noted to exist.Â
I have contacted Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, the Long Beach City Council, and the Unified District Superintendent of Schools, and all have refused to even discuss the below noted problem.
When Long Beach passed an ordinance which authorized the operation of “medical marijuana dispensaries,” the ordinance stated that they could be no closer than 1,000 feet from elementary schools, and no closer than 1,000 feet from each other. Further, they were not to be in residential areas (no definition of “residential area” given. They also would be issued business permits after public hearings.
All of the locations below noted are operating with actual Long Beach business permits, yet there were NO posted public hearings on any of the locations.
There were FOUR such dispensaries located in an 11-block stretch along Wardlow Road, between Gardena Avenue and Lewis Avenue— two of which were in violation of the code as it presently exists, and no one seemed to want to enforce even the previous ordinance covering marijuana medical dispensaries!
One location (1175 East Wardlow) is less than 900 feet from John Burroughs Elementary School (33rd and Orange Avenue) and also less than 500 feet from Signal Hill Water Reservoir Park (Wardlow Road between Gundry and Brayton avenues), where many school and pre-school children play. This same dispensary is also less than 1,000 feet from another marijuana medical dispensary, located at 1071 E. Wardlow (which also is 30 feet from a residential neighborhood). However, as of Jan. 27, 2011, the 1175 East Wardlow facility has just been ordered closed due to the violations of Long Beach ordinances.
The other two dispensaries are located at: 1603 E. Wardlow (50 feet from a residential neighborhood) and one on the corner of Wardlow Road and Gardena— which clearly is in a business district).
The 1175 E. Wardlow location was called to the attention of the principal of Burroughs, but apparently even at that level, no one appeared to be that concerned about the welfare of the neighborhood children.  Â
Also on East Fourth Street— at the corner of Fourth and Olive (743 Fourth St.) is yet another marijuana medical dispensary which is less than Long Beach city ordinance distance from the following: St. Anthony Church (600 Olive Ave) which houses St. Anthony Elementary School and Constellation Charter School— less than 1,000 feet from the dispensary and about 500 feet from Stephenson Elementary School, Fifth Street at Olive Avenue.
Also close by is MKEC (Rising Tide) Mentoring and Tutoring Center, housed at Covenant Presbyterian Church (607 East Third St.), where nearly 100 elementary-grade students are tutored Monday through Thursday— approximately 780 feet from the 743 Fourth Street dispensary.
As a private (concerned) citizen, I am contacting you because the Long Beach officials have refused to even answer correspondence about these flagrant violations of their ordinance.
