Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) will be hosting its first annual Howl-o-ween event Saturday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the shelter, located at 7700 E. Spring St.

The event intends to connect residents with shelter pets and encourage more mindful adoptions of animals in need of a home.

The LBACS will be waiving adoption fees for all pets during the event. The facility has been operating at full capacity for months, and announced on its Instagram page this week that they have no more open kennels to take in animals.

“We are excited to open our adoption service at this fun and festive time of year. We hope our community will have a chance to see the people and pets at our shelter having a ‘pawsitively’ splendid time,” said Staycee Dains, LBACS Bureau Manager in a statement.

Those attending are encouraged to come in family-friendly Halloween costumes and bring two bags of unopened store-bought pet treats to share with the pets at the shelter for a Bark-o-Treat.

Activities at the event will include the best cat room contest, where visitors to the shelter can vote on the LBACS’s best-decorated cat room, as well as a costume contest including several categories such as best animal-themed costume and funniest costume.

Additionally, there will also be a Day of the Dead pet memorial where attendees can bring photos of their fallen furry friends and write about memories of their pets to hang on the ofrenda.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at our first annual Howl-o-ween event,” said Fourth District Councilman Daryl Supernaw in a statement from the City. “This is a fun, family-friendly way for residents to enjoy the Halloween season and connect with neighbors and adoptable furry friends.”
