Love is in the air for the Long Beach Chorale’s fall program Not Just Another Love Song. The concert, under the direction of artistic director Eliza Rubenstein, will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. at Los Altos United Methodist Church.
The program includes one of Johannes Brahms’s most sublime works, the Neue Liebeslieder (“New Love Songs” ), featuring some of the talented soloists of the LBC as well as duo-pianists Bob Gunn and Katie Franklin.
Entirely different but equally stunning is Southern California native Eric Whitacre’s Five Hebrew Love Songs, written in 2002 with texts by the composer’s wife. Audiences will also hear selections from Alice Parker’s Songstream, and a smattering of P.D.Q. Bach’s Liebeslieder Polkas.
The concerts take place at two of Long Beach’s most acoustically friendly venues, where patrons can take advantage of free parking and a reception after each performance.
The Long Beach Chorale is a 40-member volunteer chorus that performs a wide variety of music. Not Just Another Love Song is the kickoff concert of the LBC’s 19th year as a Long Beach institution.
Admission is only $15, or $13 with valid student identification. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit the chorale’s secure Web site, www.longbeachchorale.org, or call (562) 427-1931.
