September doesn’t only mark the return of football, but also the opportunity to attend some last summer concerts, beach clean-ups and movie screenings.
Film and theater enthusiasts have a wide range of options this week, such as a French film at the Long Beach Art Theatre on Friday, an opening night of “The Pillowman” at the Long Beach Playhouse Saturday night and a documentary screening aboard The Queen Mary Thursday evening.
Summer evening outing options this week include a pre-Labor Day fireworks celebration Sunday night, swan boat rides along Rainbow Lagoon Monday night or karaoke at Alex’s Bar Tuesday night.

Toddler Storytime: 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Caregivers are invited to bring children between the ages of 1 and 4 to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.) to enjoy puppets, songs and stories. Free.
Movie Screening: 10 p.m. The Long Beach Art Theatre (2025 E Fourth St.) will be playing the 2006 film “The Science of Sleep.” The film follows the story of a man who falls in love with a French woman and tries to make her understand his dreams. Community Clean-Up: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help clean the Houghton Park Neighborhood (6108 Atlantic Ave.). This event is organized by the Houghton Park Neighborhood Association and the City of Long Beach. Free.
Beach Clean Up: 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Local org Let’s Make Waves needs volunteers to help clean litter off the beach. Gloves, bags and free parking will be provided to volunteers. Volunteers will meet in the Belmont Pier parking lot (3998 E Allin St.). Free.
Greek Festival: Noon to 10 p.m. A three-day celebration of Greek culture and heritage featuring food, drinks, dancing and more at the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (5761 E Colorado St.). General admission costs $5.
Summer Night Market: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Residents can shop from a variety of vendors at this night market at F&M Bank (3140 Anaheim St.) with a Khmer kickboxing demonstration, counseling service representatives from the United Cambodian Community and several food and drink vendors. Free.
Exhibit Opening: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The public is invited to the opening of the exhibit “Hija Del Istmo” by artist Hiara Aileen Machado at Munzón Gallery (1730 E Anaheim St. #A). Free.
Pasta Class: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Food lovers can learn to make their own pasta during this workshop at Partake Collective Food Hall and Commercial Kitchens (456 Elm Avenue). Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite for $65.
Live Theater: 8 p.m. The Long Beach Playhouse (5021 E Anaheim St.) will be putting on an opening performance of “The Pillowman.” Tickets can be purchased on the playhouse’s website for $35.
Dead Media Day: All day. Fingerprints Music (420 E Fourth St.) is having a two-day sale where a section of the shop will be filled with VHS, laserdiscs, cassettes and other items not usually sold in the shop.

Homelessness Outreach: 8 a.m. Norfside LB Outreach is seeking volunteers to help distribute food, water and supplies to those experiencing homelessness in North Long Beach. Residents who want to volunteer should message @norfsidelb_outreach on Instagram. Free.
Tiny Tales: 11 a.m. to noon. Young children and their caregivers are invited to listen to a story at Bel Canto Book’s Retro Row location (2106 E Fourth St.). This week’s story will be “We Are Definitely Human” by X Fang. Kids are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal. Friendly pets are welcome as long as they’re leashed. Free.
Block Party: Noon to 6 p.m. Local clothing brand Gardens & Seeds will be holding a block party in partnership with PacSun at 4145 Norse Way, featuring music, art, fashion, food and more. Entry is donation-based.
Big Bang on the Bay: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. This Labor Day celebration at Boathouse on the Bay (190 N Marina Dr.) will include dinner and a fireworks show. The event will be catered by Naples Rib Company. Housing Grand Opening: 11 a.m. The public is invited to celebrate the opening of a safe housing site for women and families that have been through the justice system at 834 Pacific Ave. The event will include a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Free.
Homework Help: 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students from kindergarten to the eighth grade can get help with their homework at Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W Willow St.). Free.
Teen Crochet Club: 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Teens between 13 and 17 are invited to the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W Broadway) to learn the basics of crochet and make their own granny squares. Supplies are provided. Free.
