College students studying urban planning and civic engagement can apply for a paid internship through the Long Beach Economic Development Department and receive hands-on experience.

The Long Beach Urban Design and Civic Engagement Internship Program will be an eight month course, running from October 23 through June 13, 2025.

The internship will provide a series of workshops, seminars, guest speaker events and networking opportunities. Internships will be assigned through Future LB alongside the Long Beach Community Design Center and Civic Confidence LLC.

Interns will converse with professionals in their respective fields, with participating guests representing public, private and nonprofit entities. After successfully finishing the internship, students will receive a $22 stipend per hour for up to 600 program hours.

“By empowering urban design and civic engagement students, we are nurturing the next generation of leaders and ensuring that the urban landscape reflects the diverse voices and visions of our community,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement.

This program is open to students ages 18 to 30 who are currently in community college or a four-year university program majoring in urban planning, architecture or a similar study. Interns must have reliable transportation. Long Beach residents as well as students living in low-income and underserved communities will receive priority for the program.

Further eligibility details and participant requirements can be found on the Long Beach Urban Design and Civic Engagement Internship Program webpage. Applications can be completed online now through Sept. 19.

“This innovative urban planning and design internship program will expose Long Beach youth to the exciting world of planning and design, enriching their knowledge of the physical environment and inspiring them to create their neighborhoods and communities in their own image,” said Long Beach Community Design Center Executive Director David Salazar in a public statement.

Funding for the internships comes from a $2.5 million grant from the #CaliforniansForAll Youth Jobs Corps initiative facilitated by California Volunteers. This statewide program also funds local youth internship programs through the Long Beach Workforce Development Team such as the Public Service Corps and Youth Climate Corps
