The Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation, and Marine is encouraging residents to volunteer for the 39th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, Sept. 23.
Volunteers are being asked to help remove marine debris at any point between 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 23 at any of the five participating cleanup sites:
- Junipero Beach (2100 E. Ocean Blvd.)
- Belmont Pier (3998 E. Allin St.)
- Long Beach Peninsula (72nd Place and Ocean Blvd.)
- Mother’s Beach (5839 Appian Way)
- Seal Beach Yacht Club (255 N. Marina Dr.)
“Residents and organizations have an opportunity to support our natural resources by participating in California Coastal Cleanup Day,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a statement from the City. “Long Beach has more than six miles of coastline that can benefit from the efforts of volunteers.”
Over 1,100 Long Beach community members participated in the 2022 annual cleanup day and removed over 2,500 pounds of debris. The City hopes to build on last year’s success by garnering more cleanup volunteers and continuing to provide residents with educational resources regarding marine debris and environmental protection.
Gloves and trash bags will be provided for volunteers at each site, but volunteers are encouraged to bring reusable buckets and gloves if they own any. Long Beach Container Terminal will also be providing California Coastal Cleanup 2023 branded reusable buckets on a first-come first-served basis to volunteers.
Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register for the cleanup and can fill out the liability waivers online ahead of time or on-site at any participating cleanup location. Parking is free for the event.
