The Downtown Long Beach Alliance (DTLB Alliance) will host a launch party this Saturday to kick off a pilot program that would allow open alcohol containers at events in designated parts of Downtown.

The event will include live music, a beer garden-style setting, family-friendly activities and drinks available for purchase from local businesses.

“This pilot is about bringing people together and reenergizing our downtown through safe, community-focused events,” said Austin Metoyer, President & CEO of the DTLB Alliance, in a public statement. “These EZ Sip events will also serve as a stepping stone as we learn best practices and prepare for global moments like the FIFA World Cup and 2028 Olympics, ensuring Downtown is ready to welcome the world.

Approved by the Long Beach City Council in June, the pilot program allows temporary open-container zones for special events under City supervision. The initiative aims to boost foot traffic, support small businesses and bring more cultural programming to Downtown.

The DTLB Alliance has created an online guide with rules, age limits and alcohol guidelines for the new Entertainment Zone program. Details can be found at downtownlongbeach.org.

The launch event is free and open to the public. It will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Promenade N between Broadway and Third Street.
