The Long Beach Police Department will conduct specialized beach-patrol and modified-exhaust operations from Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25, in an effort to address quality-of-life issues and enhance traffic enforcement in the beach areas during the Memorial Day weekend.
Additional officers will be on hand to patrol areas frequented by beach goers along major thoroughfares adjacent to the coast, according to police.
“We want residents and visitors to enjoy beach activities in a safe environment,” said Long Beach Police Commander Elizabeth Griffin. “We ask everyone to be a good neighbor and if they ‘see something, say something’ by calling 9-1-1.”
Pedestrians, bicyclists and skateboarders are also advised to follow the law. Pedestrians must cross at crosswalks, and bicyclists must obey all rules of the road. Bicyclists and skateboarders are not permitted to ride on the sidewalks in business areas and other designated sidewalks near and adjacent to the coast.
The increase in beach goers can impact the quality of life in nearby neighborhoods. Complaints of noise, particularly from vehicles with modified exhaust systems, also increase. Drivers are encouraged to survey their vehicles and ensure equipment is in compliance and park vehicles legally. Violators may be cited and/or towed.
