The Long Beach Police Department’s (LBPD) West Division will set up a checkpoint for vehicles on Friday, Feb. 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
During the checkpoint, officers will be searching for drivers that are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as well as unlicensed drivers.
The locations for checkpoints are determined using the past locations of impaired driving-related crashes. DUI checkpoints are meant to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Lieutenant Jose Flores said in a public statement. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”
It’s important for the public to recognize that certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also impair driving ability. Despite the legality of medicinal and recreational marijuana, driving under its influence remains illegal.
First-time DUI offenders may face up to $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
This checkpoint is being funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, facilitated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
