Long-time sewing enthusiasts, residents hoping to familiarize themselves with the craft, or anyone looking to be part of a creative group project are all welcome at the Long Beach Public Library (LBPL)’s ongoing program Hilos de Sueños y Recuerdos: Sew it Goes.

This community sewing series consists of several gatherings where attendees can create personal sewing projects and collaborate on an ongoing community quilt. The quilt will feature photos, prints and shared memories sewed into the fabric.

A week after the final lab session, the completed quilt will be revealed to the public before being on a rotating display schedule at all 12 LBPL branches.

“The Hilos de Sueños y Recuerdos project beautifully embodies the spirit of Long Beach—a city rich in culture, community and collaboration,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement. “By stitching together our stories, we not only preserve our history, but also celebrate the diversity and unity that make Long Beach a remarkable place to live. These events will bring residents together to create something meaningful and lasting.”

Though the series began Oct. 10 and three sessions have already passed, there will be two more open labs before Sew it Goes concludes:

  • Saturday, Nov. 9 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.)
  • Saturday, Nov. 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.)

The labs are open to participants ages 12 and up and no prior sewing experience is necessary. While limited supplies will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, attendees are invited to bring their own sewing machines and family photos to scan, transfer to fabric and sew into the quilt. No registration is necessary and Spanish language support is available.

The final quilt will be revealed in a public celebration on Saturday. Nov. 23 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). The event will feature live music and refreshments, and participants who helped put the quilt together will speak of the significance of their designs.

“At Long Beach Public Library, we strive to offer programs that foster creativity, connection and learning,” said Director of Library, Arts, and Culture Cathy De Leon in a public statement. “Hilos de Sueños y Recuerdos is a perfect example of how libraries can serve as spaces for personal expression and community engagement. We are excited to see how the collective stories, memories and artistic contributions come together in a quilt that will be cherished for years to come.”
