The City of Long Beach plans to update residents on the ongoing changes it’s making to Colorado Lagoon at a community meeting at Recreation Park on Feb. 19.
The Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project is in the last stages of its long-term restoration effort to improve water quality and ecological health by reconnecting the 18-acre tidal lagoon to Marine Stadium. The project will establish a natural tidal connection, create new wetlands and enhance the lagoon’s environmental and recreational value.
During the meeting, City staff will provide an overview of the project’s progress, including completed construction and remaining work. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the presentation. Interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog.
The City has worked with community members and agencies at the local, state and federal levels, including the Port of Long Beach, to advance the project and provide updates. Previous improvements to the lagoon, completed in 2010, 2012 and 2017, have included dredging contaminated sediments, improving water quality, supporting eelgrass and upland habitats, enhancing public access and upgrading the pedestrian bridge and irrigation system.
The Long Beach Department of Public Works will host the community meeting on the Colorado Lagoon Open Channel Project on Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Recreation Park Community Center (4900 E. Seventh St.).
