The Long Beach Youth Chorus is preparing for its upcoming season, when young singers will be able to grow and share their musical abilities with each other.

As part of their plans for the season, the Chorus is introducing the Music Mastery Program for the first year.

This program is designed for singers in grades 2-12 and focuses on music theory and ear-training to enhance participants’ understanding of music reading, with a special emphasis on music composed by members of marginalized groups.

The Chorus showcases a diverse repertoire that spans various musical styles and genres. Their performances typically feature contemporary choral works in different languages, as well as jazz and pop arrangements. Additionally, the Chorus provides training in solo singing alongside choral singing.

“It’s a huge benefit for children,” said Stan DeWitt, executive director. “There have been quite a few studies over the last few years that show that children and adults who sing in choirs tend to feel less isolated and more connected to other people. Of course, with younger children, learning rhythm and all that stuff has value in terms of understanding mathematics, and it also does a great deal to help with self-expression and self-confidence.”

The Long Beach Youth Chorus is open to singers in grades 2-12. Registration for the 2023-24 season is currently open on their website. The first rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 10, with separate timings for different grade levels.

Participation costs $125 per student.
