A recycled SpaceX Falcon 9 booster rocket carrying 10 satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 8:27pm on Friday, Dec. 22 left many Southern Californians scratching their heads— and grabbing cell phones to record the spectacular event, which was brightly illuminated by the setting sun. The space vessel transported the latest batch of satellites for Iridium, a global mobile satellite communications company. Iridium announced Dec. 27 that the set of satellites— the fourth in a series— are functioning nominally and have begun the testing and validation process.
