Residents can carve, paint and decorate their prettiest pumpkin for the annual Friends of Los Cerritos Pumpkin Decorating Contest at Los Cerritos Park on Oct 28.

Tens of pumpkins will have a seasonal face-off as kids, teens and adults compete for prizes in categories such as silliest, most creative and more. Pumpkins can be carved, painted, glued on with add-ons; there are no limits to how contestants can decorate their pumpkins, as long as they arrive ready to compete.

“It’s really fun to see how creative people are,” said Karen Miller with the Friends of Los Cerritos. “The teenagers do really interesting things.”

Residents can snack on donuts and apple cider while oohing and ahhing at the gorgeous gourds. Two board members from the Los Cerritos Neighborhood Association will judge the pumpkins and choose first, second and third place in its respective age group.

This is the first year the contest includes an adult category, as Miller said the group was asked multiple times to allow adults to compete.

Age groups will be broken up by 4 and under, 5 to 7, 8 to 10, 11 to 16 and 16 and older. Pumpkin contest winners will receive a gift card to either Cassidy’s Corner Cafe or Long Beach Creamery.

Although the event is hosted by the Friends of Los Cerritos, attendees do not need to live in the neighborhood to compete. The contest is free to enter.

The Los Cerritos Pumpkin Decorating Contest will take place on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at Los Cerritos Park at 3750 Del Mar Ave.
