Sign up event for Metro LIFE program to be held in Long Beach next week

A pop-up event will be held in Long Beach on Thursday, Dec. 16 to help enroll eligible individuals into the Metro Low-Income Fare is Easy (LIFE) program.

Metro riders with a low income can receive discounts and free rides on Metro transit systems through the program.

“We had the program before the pandemic,” said Joni Goheen, executive officer of public relations for Metro. “But we have made some changes in response to the pandemic.”

Among the new changes, beginning on January 10, 2022—the day that Metro will resume fare collection—Metro LIFE members will receive free rides for 90 days.

After the 90 day period, Metro LIFE members will receive 20 free Metro rides a month. Any unused rides can still be used the following month.

Metro LIFE members will also receive discounts when purchasing weekly or monthly passes.

Those who wish to sign up for the program at the Dec. 16 event should bring a Photo ID and their TAP card if they currently have one.

Applicants also have the option to provide proof at the event that they are low income and meet the program requirements.

Documents that can be used as proof of income include Medi-Cal, EBT, any proof of public benefits, Social Security award, a check stub or tax return.

Applicants for the Metro LIFE program must live in LA County and be 18 years or older. Minors must be enrolled by a parent or guardian.

The sign up event will be held at Long Beach Transit & Visitor Information Center, located at 130 E 1st St. on Thursday, Dec. 16 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
