Making summer trips with pets cruelty-free

Planning a family getaway this summer? These tips will help you travel safely with animal companions and arrange a cruelty-free itinerary.
• Road-tripping with Rover can be fun, but never fly animals in an airplane cargo hold. It’s too dangerous. Many animals have been lost or harmed due to delays, negligence or extreme temperatures.
• Take along your animals’ toys, blankets, bowls, food, medications and plenty of fresh water, as well as a list of emergency veterinarians in the area.
• Be sure your animal wears identification at all times, and pack a rescue kit, including food, a leash and a towel, so that you can also help any stray animals you may come across.
• Create a cruelty-free itinerary complete with vegetarian eateries and animal-friendly accommodations and entertainment. Marine parks and other animal exhibits aren’t fun for captive animals.
• Don’t patronize hotels that use caged birds or other captive animals as “decorations.” Tell the manager you won’t stay until the exhibit is removed and the animal is sent to a reputable sanctuary.
