‘Making sure that no one is alone’: LGBTQ Center to hold Christmas Eve celebration with free food, presents and karaoke

The LGBTQ Center will hold its fourth annual Christmas event featuring karaoke, free holiday meals and free Christmas presents for community members on Christmas Eve from noon to 4 p.m.

“For some LGBTQ people, the holidays can be a very difficult time. There may be some traumatic family memories, they may be separated from their family, and it is an increased period of loneliness,” LGBTQ Center representative Andy Perez said. “We feel really strongly about making sure that no one is alone.”

Residents are welcomed to take food from the breakfast bar to-go—supported by the office of Supervisor Janice Hahn—or to stay and sing along to karaoke with volunteers. The event will take place rain or shine (though it looks like it will rain).

“The season talks about togetherness and goodwill,” Perez said. “It’s the Center’s responsibility to help where we can.”

The LGBTQ Center supports more than 25,000 people a year through programs including youth and family services, older adult services, mental health counseling, legal service, domestic violence support, trans health programs, HIV and STI testing, and more than 20 weekly support groups—many of which are offered online due to the pandemic.

The Christmas celebration is open to individuals celebrating any holiday and will take place at the LGBTQ Center Long Beach on Friday, Dec. 24 at 2017 E. 4th St, Long Beach. Parking is available in nearby neighborhoods and in a lot behind the Center and the Art Theatre.
