A man walking in a pedestrian crosswalk was struck by a car and has succumbed to his injuries, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
On Wednesday, Jan. 25, at approximately 8:30am, LBPD officers were dispatched to Spring Street and Bellflower Boulevard regarding an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
Arriving officers discovered an injured male adult lying in the eastbound lanes of Spring Street, east of the intersection. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and transported him, in critical condition, to a local hospital. The victim, a 57-year-old resident of Long Beach, later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation revealed an 18-year-old male resident of Long Beach was driving a 2006 Saturn Vue southbound on Bellflower Boulevard. The driver stopped in the left turn lane at Spring Street and proceeded to turn left onto eastbound Spring Street when the left turn arrow turned green. At the same time, the pedestrian started to walk north across Spring Street in the east crosswalk against a steady red hand on the pedestrian control signal and was struck by the vehicle, according to police.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The influence of alcohol or drugs does not appear to be a factor in the collision.
The Los Angeles County Coroner will make positive identification and notify next of kin.
