One man is dead and a bicyclist injured after a vehicular accident at the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
On Sunday, April 29, at approximately 8:10am, officers were dispatched to the area regarding an injury traffic collision. Upon arrival, officers located a 2018 Ford Fusion driven by a male adult that had struck a light pole. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics transported him to a local hospital in serious condition, but he was later pronounced deceased.
It was also discovered that the driver had struck a bicyclist prior to striking the light pole. The bicyclist was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was traveling in the No. 3 southbound lane of Bellflower Boulevard, approaching Atherton Street, when his vehicle began to repeatedly strike the curb of the west service road’s raised median. The bicyclist, a 64-year-old resident of Long Beach, was also riding in the No. 3 southbound lane of Bellflower Boulevard approaching Atherton Street and preparing to stop for the red light when the Fusion struck him from behind. The vehicle then continued through the intersection and collided with a light pole on the southwest corner of Bellflower and Atherton.
