A man in his forties was fatally shot inside a Long Beach apartment building on Sunday, Jan. 30.

Officers with the Long Beach Police Department arrived at the 500 Block of East Broadway at approximately 9:26 p.m. on Jan. 30 in response to reported gunshots, according to an LBPD press release.

When officers arrived they were directed by civilians to an apartment in the 200 Block of Atlantic Avenue, where inside they found a male adult victim who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body.

According to police, officers immediately started performing emergency care on the victim until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene and determined that the victim was deceased.

According to a preliminary investigation by LBPD, a small group of people was gathered inside the apartment when the victim and a male adult suspect began arguing.

The suspect took out a firearm and fired it multiple times at the victim, police said.

No one else was injured from the shooting.

The suspect is only described as a male adult who fled the scene on foot after the shooting.

Police said the motive for the shooting is still being investigated.

Detectives are still investigating the relationships between everyone who was at the gathering, including the victim and suspect.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
