Man fatally shot in Washington neighborhood, gang detectives investigating

A 37-year-old Long Beach man was fatally shot in the Washington neighborhood yesterday, Sunday, July 11.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired on the 300 block of East 17th St. around 9:13 a.m. Police officers found Long Beach resident Bernardo Solorio with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper and lower torso, police said.

Officers performed life-saving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene to render aid, police said. The victim was transported by ambulance to an area hospital in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation suggested that a male suspect followed Solorio on foot to an apartment complex, where he opened fire on Solorio before fleeing on foot towards Long Beach Boulevard, police said.

Gang detectives initially responded to locate witnesses and evidence. Around 7 p.m., homicide detectives arrived at the scene after being notified that the victim died from his injuries.

The case is currently being investigated as gang-related, police said.
