A man was in custody Tuesday in the fatal shooting of another man in Long Beach over the weekend, police said.
Javier Jauregui, 29, of Long Beach was booked on suspicion of murder, and was being held on $2 million bail, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
Officers went to the 2300 block of Cedar Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of a shooting. Paramedics took Juan Garfias, 43, of Long Beach, to a hospital, where he died, police said.
“Through their preliminary investigation, patrol officers discovered information indicating the suspect was barricaded in a nearby residence,” police said in a statement.
“Officers immediately established a perimeter around the residence and requested the assistance of the Long Beach Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team,” police added. “Once on scene, SWAT personnel initiated a call out to the suspect to peacefully surrender into police custody and the suspect exited the residence and was subsequently arrested.”
According to police, the suspect and victim “were engaged in a verbal dispute that escalated when the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim.”
“At this time, detectives believe the suspect and victim were known to each other and that the motive for the murder is related to an ongoing neighbor dispute,” police said. “However, the investigation remains ongoing.”
Officers executed a search warrant at the residence, where they seized multiple firearms and ammunition, police said.
