Man sleeping in car killed in collision

A man whom police believe was asleep in his car was killed when another vehicle collided with his, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).
On Sunday, June 10, at approximately 4:06am, officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of Long Beach Boulevard regarding an injury-traffic collision. When officers arrived on scene, they observed that the accident involved two vehicles.
Officers found one of the drivers trapped inside a vehicle, and Long Beach Fire Department personnel had to extricate him. Paramedics determined him to be deceased. The other driver was uninjured, and there were no other occupants in the vehicles.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 19-year-old female resident of Long Beach was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz E320 south on Long Beach Boulevard. It appears that she fell asleep and collided into the rear of a 1993 Ford Escort LX station wagon. The Ford was parked along the curb in front of 2789 Long Beach Blvd., and a 70-year-old male resident of Los Angeles was asleep in the driver’s seat of that vehicle.
The momentum of the collision caused both vehicles to travel south until the vehicles came to rest up against a business building. The building had minimal exterior damage and no structural damage.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz did not have a valid driver’s license but provided proof of insurance. Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the collision, police said.
Those with information regarding the collision are asked to contact Detective S. Fox of the Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail at (562) 570-7355.
