Los Angeles Latin duo David Arthur Martinez and his wife Velia García-Martínez will be taking over the walls of Gallery Expo for the month of September with an exhibit entitled Love, Life & Legacy. David the painter and Velia the photographer together have created a dynamic experience through the use of color and emotion.
While David’s paintings capture the spirit of Latins in America through his vividly bright renditions of Latin culture from Dia de los Muertos to Frida Kahlo, Velia expresses the same vividly bright culture through her photography. David finds inspiration from such classic artists as Michelangelo, Sargent, Van Gogh, Mucha, Manet and Tadema, specifically the dramatic lighting, figure rendering and often visible brush strokes utilized by these masters. The murals of Siqueiros, Rivera and Orozco inspire his love for public and political art. As a result, David has traveled throughout Mexico and Europe to view the works of these and other masters.
Velia’s love for photography stems from the exactness of the medium. Although photos can be manipulated in numerous ways, Velia strives to capture the spontaneity of the exact moment the shutter closes. She draws her inspiration from three very talented female photographers– Tina Modotti, Flor Garduño and Isabel Muñoz.
The show, featuring more than 40 works, will open to the public during the September First Fridays art walk on Sept. 3 and will feature an artist’s reception on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 6pm to 9pm. The reception will also feature live music, snacks and a bar and will also be open to the public.
Gallery Expo is located at 4321 Atlantic Ave. Regular hours are Fridays from 4pm to 8pm and Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm.
