Long Beach City officials hosted a commemoration ceremony Tuesday at Fire Station 1 for the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a sequence of events in the New York City area that led to the death of nearly 3,000 people and the destruction of the World Trade Center and portions of the Pentagon.
Red, white and blue memorial wreaths were placed in front of the fire station in recognition of those who lost their lives during the attacks 17 years ago. The Long Beach Fire and Police departments were present during the ceremony, which included a minute of reflection at 9:11am.
“We know that, since those moments, there’s been an opportunity for us as a country to reflect,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said. “We have seen a lot of change. But, even after all this time of, often debate and wondering about where the future is of our country when it comes to the reaction of those events, we stand united always to remember and support the families, those who have lost people, those who were injured and certainly those who fight for our freedoms every single day.”
